It was a greta place to live as Alexndra Park was our haven what with the band stand in the afternoon and at night time then on a Sunday the Silver or Brass bans it was wonderful. It was lovely to reminisce

Hi Folks,
I lived at 7 Aberfoyle Street until 1968 when we left for Toronto, Canada. I'm still trying to find an old friend Audrey Simpson--we both attended Haghill school in the mid '60's. She lived at 38 Aberfeldy & then moved to 34 Aberfoyle. My mum, Agnes MacDonald (nee Sweeney) worked at Barrlowlands and before that at Collins has also lost contact with her brothers - James, George & Tommy Sweeney--would love to find out if anyone knows how to reach out to our missing friends & relatives.

I have a wee bit of history in Dennistoun- I moved here as a student when I was 17 and stayed on Findlay Drive for about a year and a half. In my mid twenties, I rented a one bedroom flat just off of Ally Parade and more recently I moved in with my boyfriend on Sword Street last summer.
My mum lived on Duke Street for about 8 years and I have fond memories of meeting up with her for a wee drink in the Duke or heading to Coias for some grub.
I decided last year to leave the busy bar trade of Glasgows' city centre and go back to college to train as an accountant while my boyfriend is completing a journalism degree. It was my idea to move to Dennistoun; I knew that rent was cheaper in this area and, from my past good experiences I knew we would be happy living here.
Unfortunately we live on, in my opinion, the worst street in Dennistoun. Sword Street seems to be home to dog muck, fly-tipping, loud neds and drunken folk, people who like to use car horns (!)and an MG with an extremely sensitive car alarm that goes off at all times.
It has almost destroyed the charisma that I always felt Dennistoun had. Only a few years ago, I would walk along the street with my mum (who has now moved further out of the city) and she would stop and say hello to a few different folk, like a real community. Living here now, the only sense of community I feel is when I go to Billys shop for milk etc and he is a nice chap who says hello etc.
Dennistoun will never be as "posh" as the West End or Southside and I wouldn't want it to be either. For me, Dennistoun is about working-class, honest, hard-working folk. The type of people who'll give the time of day and also give you some good banter in the local pub. Am I being too idealistic? Maybe. But it was like that round here only a few years ago.

Yes I can see that it was the other side of the street- it is confusing as there were quite a few families in Denniston with the macintosh name , Maybe someone else will see my post and maybe knew the family.
Thanks for letting me know
Ruth - there were no J macintoshes that I know of in the family at that time which was from about 1939 onwards that I know of and no connection to the Drygate. but good luck in your search . Most macintoshes came down from the highlands and spoke gaelic

I'm not actually from Dennistoun, or Glasgow, but I know someone who used to live in property on Dunragit St around the early 60s.
Well to be precise she stayed elsewhere, but the rest of her family lived on Dunragit St.
She actually left around this time too and I'm looking to see if there's any remaining family...primarily her three sisters. Eileen, Catherine, and Maureen.
They may have since married or moved out but any info would be greatly appreciated :)

To J. McIntosh:
We may be talking about different families. My home, #26, was on the west side of Aberfeldy Street, as were all the even numbers. The McIntoshes I knew lived across the street, in the odd numbers, not #34. The father of Ian and Bill- don't know his name - was on the Glasgow Police Force.I believe there were relatives in North America, but I can't recall location. During the war one of those relatives sent Bill a jar of peanut butter and he gave us all a sample. We thought it was terrible. Now I inhale the stuff!
To Ruth:
The period I lived in Aberfekly Street was from my birth at #26 in 1936 until 1954, when I moved to London. Will gladly help with any questions you have.
Regards,
George

Re: MacIntosh Family on Aberfeldy St.
I was born at 26 Aberfeldy St and knew Ian and Bill Macintosh who lived across the street at, I believe #31. Jim and Bill Fitzpatrick lived at 29 and John Decker lived at 27, as did Don, Margaret & Kathy McIver. Hamilton Kilpatrick lived at #30. We were all close friends growing up together between 1941 and 1948. They all attended Haghill Schoo; and then Whitehill School and I attended St.Thomass and then St. Mungos. We all shared the same bomb shelters in the back yards and across the street under the football fields.Fun days.

I knew Rita Veitch and her brother Chick. I went to Thomson street school with the older brother Johnny. Rita's married name is Mcmanus and she lives in the flats at Bellgrove street and Gallowgate. My wife lived in the Gallowgate right across the street from you, up the bank close at Soho street. Her name was Jessie Brown, still is b the way except she added Clark to it. Hope you see this email

I lived at 53 Sannox Gardens Dennistoun. My maiden name was Fergus. Attended Alexander Parade School and then left to live in Holland in 1972. Now living in Australia since 1982. Great site brings back lots of memories. Like going to the baths for a swim on Saturday and then to the pictures in the afternoon. My best friends name was Yvonne Elliott. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.

Jack Houstin is the owner of Robert D icks tailors on Hillfoot street and is among the top tailors in Scotland they are unbelievably constructed and of the highest standard I have my own suits made by Jack and can recommend his professionalism to anyone his number at work is 0141 554 0655 .Most of Jacks family and friends still live in the area . This business is a triumph for the new invigorated Dennistoun and the standard that drives the retail resurgence .The future looks good for Dennistoun residents.

i am in a senior postion in the store so can't give my name, but i can asure you that we do on a weekly basis try and increse our range of fresh produce.with regards to reduced stock,we have pre-programed machines which only allow the staff to reduce to 75% off the normal price.

Mr A.N. Other, when Somerfield first relocated to the old Kwiksave site it was such an improvement on the dirty old understocked store. I was delighted to find the fruit and vegetables were fresh and there were also a few more imaginative vegetables available (by that I mean more exotic ones). But, I'm sorry to say, the store is now going the way of the old one, with very little variety of fresh produce. Also, when produce is almost out of date, the price is never reduced by very much, whereas in other supermarkets, the reduced price always reflects the date eg Morrisons sell almost everything off for 9p. Another thing, is the carrier bags are so thin and flimsy that I always have to double them up, which is really a false economy.
Are you in a position to do anything about the store, or were just wondering? Maybe, starting a new thread regarding this would be a good idea.

I used to go to Robert D--- along with my brother, he used to get all his suits made there. Before he moved to Hillfoot St, he had a shop on Duke St and partnered a Mr McGeaghy, I remember Jackie Houston and Raymond McGregor (both from McIntosh St)were apprentices at the Duke St business in the 60s. My claim to fame is that my older brother paid for me to get a suit made by Robert himself, I used to wear it all the time.
