The Victoria Cycle Manufacturing Co

Hello all,

Does anyone else have any knowledge of "The Victoria Cycle Manufacturing Company" who were based in Craigpark Street and Alexandra Parade in Dennistoun from late 1890's through to about 1926?

The started out making bicyles, but diversified from about 1904 into making motorcycles. They were once cited by independent press as being the most succesful Scottish motorcycle ever made.

There is of course no longer, or on any Dennistoun development maps, a Craigpark Street which adds to my interest.

I have got everything and anything on the net already, most usefully a couple of adverts on the Glasgow story web site, and a colour photo on an Australian classic motor cycle web site.

Been a one man quest up until now, Transport museum not interested, one or two motor cycle museums down south have acknowledged its presence but never seen any.

The Scotland on speed programme which was on BBC2 a few months ago was supposed to have featured one, but I have my doubts. I contacted the production team but never got a response.

Any knowledge which can be shared greatly appreciated.

Thanks/regards,

Stephen

My father-in-law owns a Victoria motorcycle built in Dennistoun in 1921. I have collected some information from him and placed it on the following website www.bawdeswell.net/victoria If there is any furter information or pictures you can add, please let me know. There is a contact address on the webpages.

Stephen, not sure if you've already tried but you should post on the Hidden Glasgow website. There are guys on there who know loads about Glasgow and I'm sure someone would be able to help.

Try hiddenglasgow.com

The Victoria motorcycle works was apparently in a disused chapel opposite Alan Glen's School.
Can anyone help me with the location of Alan Glen's school which closed down in 1989?
Thank you.

The original Allan Glens was at the corner of North Hanover Street and Cathedral Street I believe. It was demolished and moved to Cathedral Street before being closed and taken over by the the Central College of Commerce. It's the building next to the Uni Library with the grass in front

Don't know about dates though.

Thank you for confirming the location of Allan Glen's School. "The disused chapel opposite" was clearly not the main factory because it was at Dennistoun. There were two smaller premises in Hanover Street and Cathedral Street where cycles were assembled and sold. The chapel was perhaps one of them.

Thanks to everyone, (especially Robin!) for picking up where I had to drop this. Just found that this thread has been picked up again and absolutley delighted with the response.

I will scan and catalouge all the data I managed to compile and e-mail it to your Robin as per your website e-mail address.

Best regards,

Stephen

I now have a photo of the Victoria Works thanks to John Coxon. It was taken in the 1970's, so the building was still there then.
Can anybody remember it and tell us where it stood?
The picture can be see at www.bawdeswell.net/victoria/jcoxon.html

The site of the Victoria Works has been located on a 1909 OS map by David Ferguson.
It was on Milnbank Street which used to be called North Craigpark Street. Mystery solved. Thank you.
